Spring Failure on Cole Grade Road
The call came at 6:40 a.m. on a Tuesday, which is when springs tend to let go. A 200-pound door had blown through one side of a torsion spring and dropped onto the track. The truck was sealed inside and the homeowner had a job site to reach. We replaced both springs, not just the broken one, because springs wear as a pair. If one has snapped, the other has been counting the same cycles. By 8:15 the door was lifting straight and the truck was out.
Bent Track After a Backing Accident Near Lake Wohlford
A car had clipped the bottom panel while backing out and kicked the vertical track off its bracket. The door was hung up at a 20-degree angle, and trying to force it down would have made everything worse. We pulled the track, straightened the panel edge, replaced both vertical sections, and put in new rollers and hinges. Then we cycled the door six times with the owner watching, because if it’s going to bind, we want it to bind in front of us, not at 10 p.m.
Wood to Steel: Refacing a 1990s Raised Panel Near Ridge Ranch
The old door wasn’t failing, it was just exhausted. Twenty-some years of Valley Center sun had bleached the finish, and one section had split where the strut had loosened. The homeowner wanted lower maintenance and better insulation, since that garage wall faces the afternoon heat. We measured and installed an insulated steel door with a Clopay finish, replaced the bottom weatherseal, and swapped the tired chain opener for a side-mount LiftMaster. The garage is quieter and noticeably cooler in July. The price was written down and agreed before the old door came off the tracks.

The homeowner thought the opener was dead. It wasn’t. The door was so far out of balance that the opener was dragging 200 pounds on a geared carriage, and the gear teeth were wearing themselves into powder. We put the door back on balance first, then replaced the opener with a belt-drive unit. If we’d just swapped the opener without fixing the spring tension, the new one would have failed the same way inside a year. We set the force limits and the travel limits on site, so the opener knows exactly where the floor is and how much it should be lifting.
Roller and Hinge Overhaul in Pauma Valley
You could hear this door from the mailbox. The metal rollers had flat spots, several hinges were loose, and the whole door was rattling the track brackets with every open and close. We replaced every roller with nylon, tightened and replaced the worst hinges, aligned the track, and lubed the torsion bar. It’s not a new door, but it acts like one. Quiet enough that the homeowner laughed the first time he opened it, because his dog didn’t bark.
Emergency Cable Replacement on a Detached Shop Door
Frayed cables are one of the few things where I’ll tell you to stop using the door immediately. When a cable goes, the door wants to drop one corner and ride the track sideways, and the whole panel stack can buckle. This shop door had three strands left on the right side. We replaced both cables, reset the drum, and checked the spring tension before running the door. It lifts true now. The owner said it felt like it was going to let go for a month and he’d just been holding his breath each time. Don’t hold your breath. Call when it starts to fray.
